An important ”Action Alert” we received from the ARC of California today…
The governor has hundreds of bills on his desk for his signature or veto, and he only has until Sunday, October 11 to act on them.
We’re very concerned that he might veto several bills that are important to people with Autism, Intellectual Disabilities and all Developmental Disabilities and their families and we are asking you to let the Governor know these issues are important to you.
Among the important disability bills at risk on the governor’s desk are four critical bills for people with disabilities:
- Help prenatal and postnatal screening for problems such as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, the biggest single preventable cause of developmental disabilities. (Assembly Bill 217 by Assembly Member Jim Bealle Jr.)
- Provide parenting training that will help prevent child abuse and neglect, a bigger problem among children with disabilities than among the general population. (Assembly Bill 543 by Assembly Member Fiona Ma)
- Move the state toward integrated employment of people with developmental disabilities – without undermining the consumers’ and families’ power to make their own decisions through the Individual Program Plans. (Assembly Bill 287 by Assembly Member Jim Bealle Jr.)
- Extend eligibility in the Medi-Cal Working Disabled Program that allows some unemployed people with disabilities to keep their Medi-Cal benefits. (Assembly Bill 1269 by Assembly Member Julia Brownley)
