Celebrating Disability Pride Month at The Arc of Butte County

July is Disability Pride Month, a time to honor the history, achievements, and experiences of the disability community. This celebration marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), enacted on July 26, 1990, which broke down numerous barriers to inclusion in society.

At The Arc of Butte County, we believe in fostering inclusion, empowerment, and independence for people with disabilities. Disability Pride Month is a powerful reminder of the importance of our mission and the work we do every day. Here’s how you can join us in celebrating and advocating for disability rights this month:

The History of Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month began in July 1990, the same year the ADA was passed. The first Disability Pride Day was held in Boston, and the first parade took place in Chicago in 2004. Today, events across the nation empower people with disabilities to take pride in their identities and celebrate their contributions to society.

2024 Theme: “We Want a Life Like Yours”

This year’s theme, chosen by The Arc’s National Council of Self-Advocates, emphasizes the disability community’s aspiration for equal opportunities and experiences. Throughout July, we will share stories of people with disabilities thriving in various roles within their communities.
