Independent Living Skills

Independence is Key

As adults, many of us strive for independence, yet for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), achieving independence often requires support and specialized services like those offered by The Arc of Butte County.

The Arc’s Independent Living Skills (ILS) programs provide vital assistance and advocate for the independent goals of disabled individuals. Recognizing the capabilities of its clients beyond the stereotypes of their diagnoses, The Arc understands that with practice and support, individuals with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, and other developmental disabilities can learn new skills and apply them in their daily lives.

As a service provider, ILS aims to empower individuals to become self-sufficient. Through the guidance of ILS instructors and coordinators, clients work towards living independently and integrating into their communities. Without such community programs, individuals with IDD may face challenges such as unsafe living conditions, unaddressed health issues, and social isolation.

The ILS program offers a range of skills training and services tailored to personal and social needs of the client. Instructors maintain regular contact with clients to support their ongoing skill development and promote independent living.

Parenting Program

While our focus is on empowering adults with disabilities to develop essential life skills, we recognize the unique challenges faced by parents with disabilities raising children with special needs. The Arc offers specialized classes through our Independent Living Skills (ILS) Parenting Program. These classes are tailored to address the specific needs of parents navigating the complexities of raising a child with intellectual or developmental disabilities. We aim to equip parents with the tools and knowledge they need to better understand their child’s unique needs, foster personal and family growth, and provide access to community resources.

Our parenting services are individualized, encompassing positive parenting techniques, supportive parent groups, and guidance on accessing community support services.
